Full-Day Kindergarten

1.

What will be the length of the full-day kindergarten?

The program will operate from 8:35-3:00 PM each day.  These are the same hours as grades 1-6.

2.

How is the program different in the Full Day Kindergarten program?

The program is consistent in both the full and half-day programs; the general pace in the full day program is more relaxed with added enrichment and extension activities.  The full day session allows more in-depth study of curriculum units and opportunities for the development of social skills in both individual and cooperative group activities.  A rest period, lunch and physical activity period will be incorporated into each day.

3.

Is there research that states that full day programs are beneficial?

Recent research supports the effectiveness of full-day kindergarten programs that are developmentally appropriate, indicating that they have academic and behavioral benefits for young children.  In full-day programs, less hectic instruction geared to student needs and appropriate assessment of student progress contribute to the effectiveness of the program.  While these can also be characteristic of half-day programs, many children seem to benefit from an all-day program.  Of course, the length of the school day is only one dimension of the kindergarten experience.  Families may also have arrangements for the other half of the day learning day that are equally beneficial.
