This site is designed as a reference for the new Massachusetts 4th grade social studies curriculum. At the present time (Sept. 1998), there is not a text book available for our 4th graders to use. Teachers piloting this curriculum are on their own this year. This site is also appropriate for 6th grade students who also study Ancient Egypt.

Introduction

This an 8-10 week unit on Ancient Egypt designed for 4th grade students. Emphasis is on their religious beliefs and how the climate and geograpghy influenced the lifestyle of Ancient Egyptians.

Content Outline

Important concepts include:

1. The Nile River was the source of life in Ancient Egypt.

2. The Ancient Egyptains had strong religious beliefs.

3. The Ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife.

4. The purpose of pyramids, tombs, and mummies.

5. Understand the magnitude of the building accomplishments of Ancient Egyptians.

6. Differences between the lifestyles of the various social classes like laborers, craftsmen, and nobles.

7. Similarities and differences between life of Ancient Egyptian children and present day American children.

Learning Objectives

1. Students will learn how and why the Nile River was so important to the Ancient Egyptians.

2. Students will be able to write a diary from the point of view of a 9 year old child living 4000 years ago in Egypt.

3. Students will understand how Ancient Egyptians beliefs in an afterlife influenced the building of pyramids and tombs and the reason for mummification.

4. Students will be able to write and talk about the life and accomplishments of a famous pharaoh.

Activities

1. Cooperatively research and give a short oral report on a famous pharaoh.

2. Make a scarab beetle or ahnk.

3. Design and draw the interior of an Ancient Egyptian house.

4. Label and color a map of the Nile during ancient times including important cities and building sites.

5. Read and answers comprehension questions about Ancient Egyptian myths.

6. Make a paper mache mummy.

7. Make and decorate a sarcophagus with paintings and hieroglyphics.

8. Design and paint the inside of a temple using drawings that depict your life.

9. Write name and a short message using hieroglypics.

10. Use hieroglyphics to represent numbers and math problems.

11. Create a timeline of important Ancient Egyptians dates and events.

12. Write and illustrate a Choose Your Own Adventure story using Hyperstudio and set during Ancient Egypt times.

13. Read the historical fiction novel A Place in the Sun by Jill Rubalcaba.

14. Read and perform short plays depicting Ancient Egyptian life.

15. Make items for and hold an Ancient Egyptian market.

Teaching Strategies

Students will work both cooperatively and independently.

Multiple intelligences used most frequently will be Verbal/Linguistic, Visual/Spatial, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Logical/Mathematical, Naturalist,and Bodily/Kinestetic.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on HW, participation, following directions, cooperation, and the quality of completed assignments. Rubrics will be used when possible.
