This site was designed as a resource for teaching the 50 states. It includes activities and resources used at a fourth grade level.

Introduction

After studying the regions of the United States, our fourth graders enjoy studying the individual states. They learn a great deal about each state as well as the research skills needed to complete their study of the United States.

Content Outline

The children will research one individual state. They will be responsible for a written report that includes the following information: state symbols, history, economics, physical features, political features, plants and animals, climate, state parks, places of interest and other pertinent information. A persuasive writing piece is also part of the project.

Learning Objectives

1. The students will complete a written report on one of the 50 States.

2. The students will learn basic research skills using printed and electronic materials.

Activities

1. Write a letter to the Chamber of Commerce to request information on a particular state (or use e-mail or 800 number).

1. Mini lessons on the use of various research tools found in the school library such as the encyclopedia, atlas, and almanac. The children can use these resources as well as state books and other books available.
