Computer Lab Earthquake Objectives:

After going through this unit, you should be able to:

            A. Describe the cause of earthquakes.

            B.  Distinguish between the hypocenter (focus) and epicenter of an earthquake.

            C.  Diagram what happens to the ground in the following types of faults:

                        1. normal

                        2. reverse

                        3. strike-slip

            D.  Compare and contrast the movement of energy as well as the ground during the following types of earthquake waves:

                        1. Primary (P) waves

                        2. Secondary (S) waves

                        3. Surface waves

            E.  Draw a basic seismograph and describe how it works to record an Earthquake.

            F.  Compare and contrast two systems of measuring the strength of earthquakes:  Richter Scale and Modified Mercalli Scale.

            G.  Describe the relationship between earthquakes and tsunamis.

Due Dates:

Your notes, which will count as a homework grade, are due on Wednesday, April 12, 2006.

There will be an open notes quiz on the objectives on Thursday, April 13, 2006.
